Handlung
Examine the dark, controversial life of Donatien Alphonse François, the French nobleman whose name became synonymous with sexual cruelty and transgression. The episode traces de Sade’s privileged upbringing, his early literary ambitions, and the scandalous behavior that repeatedly landed him in prisons and asylums. Biography explores how his writings—blending philosophy, eroticism, and violence—challenged social and moral boundaries, earning him both notoriety and lasting infamy. Through expert commentary and historical context, the program delves into the turbulent political era that shaped his worldview, his fraught relationships, and the decades he spent confined under shifting regimes. The episode ultimately presents a complex portrait of a man whose radical ideas and disturbing imagination left an enduring, unsettling mark on literature and cultural history.
